Strategic Visualization & Empathy

Empathy is the “identification with and understanding of another’s situation, feelings, and motives.” As a nation, as a culture, as individuals, we become healthier by being able to imagine what it’s like to be someone else, to vicariously experience another’s vulnerabilities and hardships, as well as motivations and successes. Through visualization that incorporates all the senses, we can elicit empathy to communicate better and solve problems more effectively.

Whole-body Thinking When facilitating leadership groups, I introduce the concept of whole-body thinking by saying the word “chair” and asking people what comes to mind. Even with small groups, where everyone is sitting in the exact same type of chair, there is never consensus. If you’ve just returned from vacation, are a new mother, have a bad back, or like to read comfortably, the chair in your mind might be a beach, rocking, ergonomic, or not a chair at all, but the sense of comfort you have when reading in your favorite spot. You might only have a clear image of the utilitarian chair beneath you in the meeting room. Our understanding of concepts is layered in our bodies and minds through memory and the senses. If we think we’re all talking about an idea without acknowledging and articulating our affinity for and experiences with those concepts, then we’re not communicating well. Words alone, though we think we agree on their meaning, can mislead even our best intentions.

How does your sensory experience, memory, knowledge, and imagination enable you to be more empathic? If the “chair” you’re discussing is actually health, education, equity, leadership or any other concept where you are seeking discovery and collaboration, how might you use visualization tools for whole-body thinking? The empathy that we get from “stepping into someone else’s shoes” or “sitting in someone else’s chair” helps us deepen conversations and realize productive outcomes.

Roller Coaster to the Cloud

At SAPPHIRE NOW 2015 in Orlando, “Roller Coaster to the Cloud” emerged as my “big picture” takeaway from three days of listening to conference attendees’ concerns and ideas. It’s no surprise that “now” is about the cloud. How to put us there—all our data, everything about us. How to have easy access in real-time, all the time, and with ultimate security. How to get there as fast as possible and “keep it simple.”

What a topsy-turvy ride! One attendee who saw the summary mural said, “Love the roller coaster to the cloud concept. You nailed it!” This is what visual thinking can do — nail a concept in such a way that you can hang your hat on it.

What sparked the roller coaster metaphor for me was an attendee’s comment to “Let go of fear!” He was speaking specifically about people’s reluctance to fully embrace mobile and the cloud, yet the imperative related to other concerns about cyber security, culture shift, core systems, and the speed of change. Also, the view from my hotel window of a giant ferris wheel rising from treetops a few miles away and the surprise launch of a hot air balloon on the hotel lawn below my balcony energized the drawing.

We humans live in our bodies and senses. We relate more readily to the tangible world than an abstract landscape overly populated with jargon “maximize!” “leverage!” “aggregate!” or acronyms “ERP!” “MIS!” “IOT!” Letting go of fear could be letting go the handrail while spinning upside down on an amusement park ride, flying miles high above ground (on a hot air balloon or an airplane in a storm), or deciding to put our businesses and personal lives in the cloud. However we value thrills or progress, they come with risks and discomforts, as well as rewards.

The summary mural built from three days at the Deloitte booth, when Bryan Pray and I listened to the varied and thematic concerns and ideas of the conference attendees who stopped by the EnVision Wall. Sparked by questions prepared ahead of time by Deloitte, the answers revolved around business and technology priorities, disruptions, opportunities, investments, core systems, enhancements, changes, measurements, and strategies. In text, illustrations, and visual metaphor, I drew five murals highlighting the attendees’ pressing and nuanced concerns.

The Roller Coaster to the Cloud contains highlights of the three days, including these imperatives: Engage customers over their lifetime. Turn legacy business into future business. Let go of fear. Look for innovations. Analyze vast amount of data. Use predictive analytics. Improve security for all apps, personal data, and cyberspace. Simplify the architecture. Implement and help others implement. Keep it simple. Look ahead. Make magic!

Note: Bryan Pray and I attended in affiliation with Live Marketing. I was also there in partnership with Visual Ink Creative. I enjoyed the event and appreciate these creative affiliations. Thank you!

Public Banking Institute

A dynamic conference hosted by the Public Banking Institute and the Green MBA Program took place at Dominican College in San Rafael, California, on June 4, 2013. The mural by Christine Walker captures the 7 Steps of the process in helping to get a public bank established in your community. The steps were articulated by Marc Armstrong, Executive Director of the Public Banking Institute, and Harry Ohls, Systems Solutions consultant. Public Banking puts the “public” back in public finance and benefits communities by providing capital for lending and local investment.

See Shape

See thought. Shape vision. Focus action. These simple statements encapsulate a complex process that engages whole thinking. It’s a left and right brain gestalt which is not only greater than the sum of its parts, but also a synergy that sparks energy for innovation and motivation.
